    • From the White Hall Register, September 26, 1913: Elisha G. Bridgewater passed away at the old Bridgewater homestead in the Oakdale vicinity at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, aged 74 years and 26 days. Funeral services were held at the homestead Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by Rev. W.R. Johnson of this city, after which the body was laid at rest in the Bridgewater cemetery.
Deceased was born in Hancock County, Illinois, Aug. 26, 1839, was one of a family of fourteen children, his parents being William D. and Nancy Pasley-Bridgewater. His father was a native of Tennessee and his mother of Virginia. His grandfather came from England. A peculiar co-incident about this family of children - there were seven boys and seven girls: seven had blue eyes and seven had black eyes; seven had black hair and seven had light hair.
Mr. Bridgewater came to Greene county in 1863, locating in 1867 on the farm where he resided almost continually until his death. Sept. 21, 1865, he and Miss Sylvia J. Boirun were united in marriage, and to them were born two children, Frank Bridgewater of this city, and Addie M., wife of John Voiles of Guymon, Okla. Only one of the seven brothers, J.T., of Hillview, is not living. The surviving sisters are Nancy, widow of John Stark of southern Illinois; Emma, widow of ________ Bowman of Beards town; Elizabeth, widow of _____ Chute of Rushville, and Harriett L., wife of J.W. Chapman of Hillview. In 1877 he was converted to the Christian faith, the meetings being held at that time in the "stone house" under the bluff. Later he united with the Baptist church. He acquired only a common school education, but used it to a good advantage, and was always found on the right side of all questions pertaining to the up building of the community in which he lived. One of his characteristics was his devotion to home and family, and he cared nothing for notoriety. He never held public office, but did serve his precinct once as constable many year ago, and possibly a term or two as school director of his district. A few years ago - February 1905 - his wife died, after which he disposed of his land and chattels and since then resided with his children, usually spending the winters in Oklahoma with his daughter and the summers with his son in this city or on the homestead now owned by him.
Mr. Bridgewater was one of the original promoters of the Hartwell drainage and levee district, and our impression is he was one of the first commissioners. During one of his recent visits in Oklahoma, he purchased 200 acres of land, which he owned at time of his death.
Until the death of his wife, since which his health began to fail, Mr. Bridgewater was never known to be too sick to wait on himself, or get up and get a drink of water at any time he wanted it. During the last five years, however, a general breakdown took possession of him and he also suffered two slight paralytic strokes. Early last spring he returned from Oklahoma and remained at the home of his son on south Jacksonville street until three weeks ago when he was possessed of a strong desire to return to the old home for a few days, feeling that it would do his soul good to once more look across the vast acreage of "old Grassy" on the west and the oft-climbed bluffs round about. Being improved in health and able to walk about, his son took him in his auto to the old home place where his eyes feasted of years gone by, his daughter, Mrs. Voiles, who has been assisting in caring for him the past three months, doing all she could to minister to his wants being assisted by his only brother, John T. Bridgewater, and he seemed to be holding his own and was better satisfied. Wednesday night of last week he was again taken seriously ill and gradually grew worse until the end came at the time above mentioned.
