    • OBITUARY.- Died.—In Trenton, Mo., of Typhoid Pneumonia, Mar. 14th, 1877, Mrs. Elizabeth LaCount, aged 58 years, 10 months and 26 days.
Mrs. LaCount, whose maiden name was Eddy, was born in Dearborn county, Indiana, April 18th, 1818. In 1839 she was married to Dr. Benj. Carter with whom she lived in domestic happiness until 1850 when he died, leaving her alone with three children. A few years later she married James LaCount and with him moved to Trenton where the last twenty years of her life was spent. Mr. LaCount died in 1866, leaving two sons to her last care.
Mrs. L. was a woman of remarkably pure and holy life. She was not satisfied with a simple profession of religion which she made early in life, but became a devout Bible student with a resolution to follow its teachings into every path of duty. She never hesitated a moment to change a position or relationship in religion or church in following the word of God in its commands and promises. To be right with the word of God was vastly more to her than to be in sympathy with the doctrines of men, be they never so popular. After an experience and fellowship with the M. E. Church and then the New Lights, she took her position with the Church of Christ on the the word of God alone in doctrine and life, and never after doubted her creed or her relationship.
Duty was always her first call. She instructed her children in the Word of God and led them to the obedience of his commands. She regularly gathered them around the family alter and in faith and prayer commanded them and herself to Him who hears the widow’s prayer and orphan’s cry. He “went about doing good” was said of her Master, and she followed him. She came to the suffering and the sick not only to inquire, but to minister. She became a mother to the orphan and a friend to the friendless. Her pure ministries and the holy influence of her life will long be a remembrance in the community. With those who knew her best her name is a synonym of all that is pure and true and beautiful and ennobling in woman’s character.
Church, children, grandchildren, community all mourn her love and bring the tear to moisten the dust o’er the grave where she sleeps. Her last illness was brief, with much physical suffering, but with christian patience. Frail in body for many years she expected the call at any moment, and often said, “I am not afraid;” and when the pure spirit left the body, we uttered the inspiring thought of Christ, “I am the Resurrection and the Life.” [Trenton Republican, March 1877]

    • According to The Southwick Genealogy, page 244: "He [David Southwick, Frances' father] started with his wife for Lafayette, Indiana, to visit their daughter; on reaching Waterford, Erie Co., Penn., his wife became sick and after a year's illness died there. He afterwards married at Benson, Vt., Mrs. Mary Stacey, the widow of his wife's brother, Jan. 23, 1825."

Frances and John Eddy were in Indiana by 1818 and moved to Tippecanoe County, the county Lafayette is in, sometime after 1820. None of David Southwick's other daughters lived in Indiana, and they appeared to remain in the New York/Vermont area. One daughter, Malinda, eventually ended up in Illinois, but that move appears to have occurred long after the 1820s.

  • Notes
    • Although Benjamin Carter's diary indicates that in 1840 Elizabeth (Betsy) was living in Laramie Township (Cleaveland), Tippecanoe County, Indiana, at the beginning of the year, I have been unable to find them in the census. I have read Tippecanoe County, page by page and have not be able to find the Carter family. I can find the "Pippin" that the diary mentions, and it is clear that these families probably live close together.

Some indication that the family moved to Grundy County, Missouri on June 22, 1856
